The Sweet Sound of Bass Guitar in Metal

close up of bass guitar struts

One of the most iconic scenes from the 1981 film SPINAL TAP is all about that bass. Whose sides didn’t split clean open when not one, not two, but three members of the heavy metal band were playing sick bass licks to the refrain of “Big Bottom, Big Bottom – talk about bum cakes, my girl’s got ’em!”

Needless to say, one of the defining characteristics of Metal music is that “Big Bottom.” The bassist anchoring a band can make or break the sound.

Cliff Burton, (of thrash metal Metallica fame,) helped to define the sound of Metal bass early on. His sweet tones were so full that they could cut through the 3 electric guitar lineup of the touring Metallica. Known for being a versatile and wild performer, fans rave about his sick solos.

Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris is another great of example. Creator of the often imitated “Maiden Gallop,” Steve also wrote the iconic bass lines of tunes like “The Number of the Beast,” “Run for the Hills,” and “Aces High.” He spearheaded the idea that the bassist didn’t have to match exactly what the guitar players were doing. Instead, he branched on his own and developed a separate sound that meshed with the whole.

No talk of awesome bass is complete without paying homage to Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath. He was so good, Sabbath didn’t even need a rhythm guitarist. He is often consider one of the Fathers of Heavy Metal, renowned for his work on tracks like “Children of the Grave.”

Looking towards more modern music, Justin Chancellor of metal-fusion band Tool has created a new style all of his own. His bass lines are frequently more complex than any of his contemporaries. He manages to create both rhythm and melody simultaneously.

No metal band is complete without that sweet bass sound!

Well done to Megadeth for their Grammy nomination

Thrash veterans gain recognition for their musical achievements

Megadeth are part of the infamous “Big Four” thrash metal bands that were formed in the Bay Area in the early 1980s. The other three groups included in the Big Four are Anthrax, Metallica, and Slayer. Without a doubt Metallica have been the most successful part of the quartet both in terms of total record sales and critical acclaim. Megadeth were actually formed by lead singer and guitarist Dave Mustaine who was briefly a member of Metallica.

However Mustaine formed Megadeth as he had wanted to do things differently from Metallica. Mustaine formed Megadeth yet could be forgiven for believing that he and the rest of the group have not always had the recognition that their music and their long career should entitle them to. The band have not had a bad career by any means, yet they have not achieved the stellar success enjoyed by Metallica either. Over the years they have made some of the finest and most influential thrash metal records ever released. With a career lasting over thirty years it may be surprising how little acclaim they have received in that time.

Megadeth sold well yet who was nominating?

Dave Mustaine and company have released some classic thrash metal offerings over the years. Perhaps their most notable album so far has been “Peace sells but whose buying?” Peace Sells was released in 1988 and sold well in comparison with the Anthrax and Metallica records released around the same time.

Their most successful single was their cover version of the 1972 classic from Alice Cooper “No more Mr Nice Guy.” The song was made for the soundtrack of the first Bill and Ted motion picture. This single helped to bring thrash metal to a more mainstream audience, in a similar to “One” by Metallica and “Indians” by Anthrax. They also sound like they were having a lot of fun when they were recording the song too. Doing the cover also allowed younger listeners to discover the joys of listening to Alice Cooper.

It was great to be nominated

After years of not been recognized by enough of the music press and critics it is definitely about time that Megadeth were nominated for a well known music award. Whilst playing the music that they love was the main reason why the band formed it is certain they will be grateful for some form of recognition. As the Grammy’s are the most widely known music awards getting nominated can only raise the public profile of the band. Publicity, especially positive publicity is always a good thing for any musical act. It can act as a catalyst for higher record and download sales as well.

So the members of Megadeth should enjoy their time in the limelight because they deserve recognition for their contribution to the music industry in general and thrash metal in particular. They deserve to be congratulated on their musical achievements as well as their Grammy nomination. Hopefully another nomination will come sooner than this one.

With songs such as “Girls, Girls, Girls” and “Dr. Feelgood” Motley Crew drove the harder Hair Band types.

Meet the metal hair band turned softer. Poison is remembered for songs like “Something to Believe in” and “Every Rose Has its Thorns”. These songs became the Hair romance anthems through the 80s and bring back great memories to everyone who heard them even now. Frontman Brett Michaels could transform from the dirty metal rock and roller to the guy next door with the beautiful hair and a guitar making this band one of the Awesome 80s Hair Bands.

Van Halen

Jump for this awesome hair band. Van Halen is the band who made everyone admit they were “Hot for Teacher” and David Lee Roth caused an “Eruption” everywhere he went. Flamboyant David Lee Roth had parents trying to figure him out and fans dancing to his extream exploits. Van Halen made music loud not just in volume but in dress and show. They were the ultimate spectacle.

 Twisted Sister

No 80s Hair Band list is complete without Dee Snider and the gang of Twisted Sister. Appealing to groups of teens and pre-teens with songs like We’re Not Going To Take It” and “I Wanna Rock”, Twister Sister gave birth to the “do what you want” group. Their songs have been used in movies, as class songs, and in commercials throughout the 80s and well into the 2000s.
